Weekly Policy and Political Report, June 6 - 10
The local elections last Sunday gave an insight into the general political options for the upcoming parliamentary elections, and tested the parties’ capacity to regain their voters’ confidence. This week, MPs returned in Parliament after their unofficial recess, in the context of the elections. With less than a month before the official summer recess, MPs are now trying to speed up the process of passing certain legislative proposals.

Progress Report on Fiscal Policies, June 6 - 10, 2016
Members of Parliament convened after the electoral campaign and resumed their activity in Parliament, one month before the official summer recess. Over the course of the past week, a series of draft bills were put up for debate in the two chambers. L196/2016, draft bill limiting the ways in which the Fiscal Code can be amended, was debated in the Senates' plenary session, during which Senators demanded an additional report from the Committee for Budget, Finances, Banking Activity and Capital Markets. The initial report proposed the rejection of the draft bill.

Weekly Policy and Political Report, May 30 - June 3, 2016
The upcoming week is expected to be quite eventful, given the local elections this weekend and the Government’s decision to pass the Ordinance on public employees’ wages during next Tuesday’s sitting. After this week’s Government meeting, everyone is expecting the new enforcement guidelines for public procurement to be published in the Official Gazette, which would finally allow the Law on Public Procurement and the Law on Sectoral Procurement to be implemented. Following the publication of the enforcement guidelines in the Official Gazette, the currently locked-down SEAP public procurement platform will be reopened and function within the parameters imposed by the new legislation.

Progress Report on Fiscal Policies May 30 - June 3, 2016
Over the course of the past week, Ministers of Finance and Communications, as well as the chairman of the National Taxation Agency, released updates on the evolution of the ongoing digitalization process of the revenue administration. Referring to the progress made in the administration modernization process, ANAF's Dragoș Doroș confirmed that in less than three months, every ANAF office would be equipped with POS terminals as to allow credit card transactions. This project is part of ANAF's efforts of simplifying procedures as to increase revenue collection, which marked a 7.8%  y-o-y increase in 2015

Weekly Policy and Political Report May 23 – 27, 2016
Senate Speaker Călin Popescu Tăriceanu has been put under investigation by the National Anticorruption Directorate for perjury in a file concerning illegal land retrocessions. Although political sources demanded his resignation, Tăriceanu refused to comply, accusing that Romania has become a 'prosecutors’ republic', and that the justice system has been interfering with politics.
