Last week, Vasile Blaga stepped down from the leadership of the National Liberal Party, leaving Alina Gorghiu the sole president of the party. Blaga resigned after the National AntiCorruption Directorate placed him under 60-day judicial control for influence peddling. The case is connected to the funding of the 2009 electoral campaign of the Liberal Democratic Party (PDL), the governing party at that time. The recent corruption scandal casts a shadow over PNL’s chances in the December 11 elections, as Blaga was a tried expert in fundraising and managing an electoral campaign. Apart from Blaga, the National Liberals also lost Ludovic Orban, with the latter announcing that he is not going to runfor another term.

Progress Report on Fiscal Policies, September 26 - October 3, 2016
Efforts to modernize the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) continue, as ANAF’s president Dragoș Doroș announced in a meeting with the Foreign Investors’ Council. Doroș streamlined a version of ANAF that is dedicated to reducing the fiscal burden by turning ANAF into a fully-digitized institution. At the same time, Doroș stated that the institution is also encouraging civil servants to offer practical and legal assistance to taxpayers.

Progress Report on Fiscal Policies, September 19 - 26, 2016
The week began with FinMin Anca Dragu confirming once again that the state budget for 2017 will be a responsibility of the future Government, to be sanctioned by the newly elected Parliament. Also, Dragu announced that the Ministry she runs has no intention of raising taxes or of changing the fiscal philosophy, adding that individuals with liberal professions or independent activities will not be the targeted by increases in taxation and that significant changes concerning tax regulations should be debated and voted in Parliament. By making these statements, Dragu passed on the responsibility to the future Executive and Legislative bodies, with measures of de-bureaucratization, procedure simplification and fiscal predictability being the only aspects currently tackled with by the current Finance Ministry.

Weekly Policy and Political Report September 19 - 26, 2016
    Almost one year after the massive protests against the Ponta-led PSD-UNPR-ALDE Government, thousands of Romanians have taken to the streets to protest in front of the Parliament against Senators’ vote in the case of former Deputy PM Gabriel Oprea, prosecuted in a criminal case following the death of Police officer Bogdan Gigină. According to the internal rules of the Senate, Oprea’s resignation has to be submitted and registered to the Standing Bureau in order to come into effect. Oprea had until Monday, 18:00 o’clock, to submit his resignation, which he posted on Facebook half an hour before the deadline. The Senate officially received the resignation letter a couple of minutes before the deadline.
